FAQ

General questions about camping

How much water does a camper use and how can I use it sparingly?

Campervans and motorhomes are usually equipped with a fresh water tank. This usually has a capacity of approx. 50 - 100 liters. It takes a few days to rinse, cook, brush your teeth, and if you are particularly economical, it will certainly last longer. Showering naturally uses a lot of water, so we recommend showering at campsites or at public beach showers and using it sparingly when rinsing and washing. For example, you can use cooled pasta water to pre-wash dishes.

Campsites usually have water stations where you can fill up your camper's water tank. Gas stations abroad also usually offer water stations where you can fill your tank for little money. Make sure that it is mostly not drinking water. With apps like Park4Night or Nomad Park, you can find water stations near you or on your route. You can find more helpful apps for camping here.

How do I empty the toilet in the camper?

You can empty chemical toilets specifically at designated disposal stations on campsites or motorhome sites, sometimes even at gas stations. There are helpful apps, including Nomad Park, which show designated disposal stations near you on a map. The advantage of dry separation toilets is that you have several disposal options. You can empty the urine canister into toilets and dispose of the solid bag in trash cans.

How do I wash, rinse and shower in an environmentally friendly way?

Use biodegradable soaps and dish soap to protect the environment. There are now many suppliers, such as Dr. Bronner's products, to rinse in an environmentally friendly way. However, no residues should be left in nature. Also try to collect gray water and empty it in disposal stations.

How do I ensure my safety on campsites?

Campsites are usually a very safe place to stand and spend the night during the day. However, we recommend that you always lock the camper here as well. Store your valuables safely and don't leave them in the vehicle in plain sight.

Where can I park my camper?

Overnight stays are allowed on designated camping and parking spaces. Wild camping is not permitted or only permitted to a limited extent in many countries. Therefore, check local regulations before you leave. Detailed information about searching for a parking space and what is actually allowed can be found in our blog article on top of that.

What are the travel costs, tolls or vignettes?

How does the ventilation work in a camper? Is oxygen a problem?

Most campers have windows or ventilation flaps to provide fresh air. However, make sure to ventilate regularly, especially at night or when cooking. Condensation inside the camper should be avoided.

What should I consider when it comes to the height of my camper?

Pay particular attention to the height of your camper when driving under bridges, height-restricted parking spaces or in parking garages. Information about the dimensions of the camper can be found in the enclosed vehicle registration document.

How big is the refrigerator in the camper?

Depending on the size of the vehicle, the refrigerator in a camper usually has 30 - 80 liters. This is enough to refrigerate food for a few days. However, you must assume that fresh food will have to be bought more often. Include this in your everyday life and cooking plan.

Which gas bottles do I need and where can I change them?

Depending on the size of the camper, a 5 or 11 kg gas bottle is used. Small models often include camping stoves with small gas cartridges. You can replace gas bottles at gas stations or special gas stations. You can find gas cartridges in hardware stores or Decathlon stores, among others.

What do I have to do when it rains?

If you use an awning, leave it at a slight angle so that no water can collect. Close windows and doors to keep the interior dry. And bring in everything that shouldn't get wet - e.g. shoes that are still in front of the camper? :-) If it doesn't wind and rain too hard, you can also fold the table and chairs under the camper to protect them from rain. If you have a cable drum outside, you'd better place it under the vehicle or bring it in so it doesn't get wet.

Can I bring my bike?

Many campers are equipped with bike racks. When planning your camping trip, let us know if you want to bring a bike and we can take this into account when choosing a rental camper. Before departure, make sure that the carrier is correctly fastened and check the permitted load. Some countries, such as Italy, Spain and Portugal, also require a warning sign on the back of the bike rack - you can find all information about this at ADAC.

What is the general process at a campsite?

Campsites usually have a check-in area with a reception. On arrival, you can check in there as well as at a hotel and receive information about your parking space, sanitary facilities, electricity connections, etc. You can ask questions directly to the campsite staff there. With our What's App service, we are also available to you at any time if you have any questions and may contact the campsite.
